Keeping watch over container cargo

40m tall high-masts at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Mumbai

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) near Mumbai is the biggest container handling port in India, carrying 55% of the total container traffic in the country! This enormous volume also makes it the 35th biggest port in the world! A Container Storage Facility at a port such as JNPT has many tall stacks of containers stored at various locations. To counter the obstruction of light (and therefore shadows) created by these multi-storey stacks, the facility uses very tall 40m high-masts (that is almost 12 storeys high!). At this facility, each of the 40m high-mast poles had 12-16 fixtures of 800-1000W Metal Halide lights. But the high maintenance, very high energy consumption and rapidly deteriorating intensity of the light, prompted JNPT to seriously consider LED lights option.

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to throw concentrated light on the ground from a height of 40m with general purpose flood lights because of high light dispersion and wastage. Moreover, the highly corrosive saline atmosphere near the sea poses its own reliability challenges. Very mindful of these challenges, JNPT engineers chose Aagami’s purpose-built high-mast lights as their final choice. We not only replaced the MH lights with 265 and 330W LED lights but we also substantially improved the overall lighting! And JNPT was especially pleased that our lights delivered more than promised, as a result some of our fixtures that they purchased are serving them elsewhere! Not only that we created history with JNPT, but we did it by underpromising and over-delivering!
